Birkensaft – Zeit!

In den ersten warmen Frühlingstagen, noch bevor die Blätter austreiben, schießt der Saft in die Birken und kann abgezapft werden. Er gilt als sehr gesund und erfrischend; kann aber nur wenige Wochen geerntet werden. Wir haben heute probeweise einen Schluck gewonnen; es dauert schon eine ganze Weile bis man genügend Tropfen gesammelt hat. Hypericum perforatum

Last weekend I gathered St. John’s wort (Hypericum perforatum) and yarrow (Achillea millefolium). They are both great healing plants and can be found in high quantity at meadows and in forests (not yarrow). Although I don’t have my own garden yet I can harvest all the time because nature has so much to offer. The more I learn about plants, the more I’m able to see the nature’s garden full of food and medicine.… weiterlesen

Harvesting

This weekend we  gathered apples and plums that were fallen down at a nearby meadow with scattered fruit trees. We also picked blackberries and yarrow (to make tea). At home we made jam from the plums and the berries. We used refined fruit sugar and some apples (because of their pectin) as a replacement for gelling sugar and flavoured the plum-yam with cinnamon. The apples are to sour for eating but  I guess as dried rings they will be quite tasty.… weiterlesen

Collecting Herbs

DSC05357Last weekend we collected herbs and dried them for healthy teas. Woodruff, narrowleaf plantain, dandelion, horsetail, strawberry-leaves, peppermint and nettles. We cooked the fresh young nettles as an alternative to spinach but I didn’t liked it so much. I was lucky to find watercress, which is rather seldom because it needs excellent water quality. The cress was surprisingly spicy! Unfortunately we can’t find ramson; I would like to have it because I really like the taste of garlic.… weiterlesen
